Charity Sleepover raises over £800!

10th December 2013

Sixty children from KS2 had a great time at the Charity Sleepover on Friday night and raised £823.82 in the process.  In keeping the theme of raising money to help the people in the Philippines, children had a light tea of soup and a hot dog.  They then watched a film.  After the film, Mrs Farrell led a liturgy for the people affected by the typhoon.  The children then had hot chocolate and a biscuit, before settling down in their sleeping bags and watching a second film.  Eventually, eyelids began to droop and the children slowly went off to sleep – just after midnight!!

Year 4 were first to wake up at about 6.30am. Then, it was up, dressed and sleeping bags packed away – ready for a simple breakfast of toast and juice. And before everyone knew it Mums and dads were collecting their children.

The verdict from the children – a resounding success!  The staff…..they went home exhausted for some well deserved sleep.

The money will be split (50/50) between CAFOD and the PTA (to improve mobile technology in the classrooms).  Thank you for your generosity.

Attendance and punctuality

4th December 2013

We are very proud of our high attendance figures which we have now maintained for a number of years.  We are similarly proud of our good levels of punctuality.  These figures are the result of effective policies to promote good attendance and punctuality which are fully supported by the vast majority of our parents.

Whilst we understand that everyone can have the occasional ‘late’, there are currently a small number of children who are late on a regular basis.  To remind everyone, school starts at 8.55am every day.  Lessons begin promptly at 9am.  All children who arrive at school after 8.55am must enter school via the main entrance. Please do not disturb lessons by knocking on classroom doors or windows to gain entry to the building.

Pupils who continue to be late on a regular basis will be contacted by letter and asked to attend a meeting with the Headteacher and Education Welfare Officer (EWO).

Traffic congestion and Car parking Issues

4th December 2013

No doubt parents are acutely aware that the current building work at the end of Kynder Street has compounded an already difficult car parking and congestion situation.  Clearly, this has had a negative impact on yourselves, the children, residents, school staff and the parish community.  I have spoken to the Council and the police about the matter.  They council have agreed to discuss the matter at the next PACT (Police and Community Together) meeting.  This meeting will be attended by local councillors and I urge you to express your individual concerns to the councillors in an attempt to seek a positive resolution to this potentially very dangerous situation.

For the safety of the children and adults walking to school, please do not park on the yellow zig zag lines outside school. Please be extra cautious when driving in the area around school.  We have had numerous reports of cars mounting the pavements which is extremely dangerous for all concerned.

Operation Christmas Child

4th December 2013

Congratulations to Class 1C who managed to put together a fantastic 87 Christmas shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.  The children wish to thank everyone for their kind donations.  They will bring much joy and happiness to those receiving them.

Year 5 STEM project at St Thomas More

4th December 2013

Class 5H are taking part in the Science, Technology and Maths (STEM) project at St. Thomas More. The aim of the project is to develop the children’s problem solving and collaborative work skills.  The project involves a series of lessons centred around design and build tasks.  Their most recent visit involved planning and designing a Formula1 car and race track.  The children are certainly enjoying the project and they have developed a ‘can do’ attitude to problem solving and collaborative working which is great to see.

Our Y5 pupils have been excellent ambassadors for St. Mary’s recently.  Congratulations to all our Y5 children for all the positive feedback which keeps flooding into school.

Year 5 – Junior Sports Leader Award Day at St Thomas More

4th December 2013

Class 5H visited St. Thomas More to take part in their annual Junior Sports Leader Award (JSLA) Day.  They played a variety of sports with pupils from St John Fisher and St Anne’s and took part in a mini Olympics in the afternoon. The coaches said that the children showed ‘great spirit and teamwork skills’.  The children will return to St Thomas More in the summer term to complete the award.  This will also involve helping our Y2 children develop their skills in PE and Sport.

Year 5 – Guitar Tuition and Showcase Event

4th December 2013

All the children in Year 5 are currently learning to play the guitar and have a weekly lesson with Mr Horner (Tameside Music Service).  The children have been loaned a guitar for the year and are encouraged to practise regularly at home.  On Monday, the children performed a number of songs in front of the whole school and their parents.  The children have made excellent progress in a short space of time and are rightly proud of their achievements.  This enrichment provision is subsidised by school and we hope that children will be encouraged to continue to learn a musical instrument when they are in Year 6 and / or at high school.

All our KS2 children have the opportunity to play an instrument in a small group (ensemble) with specialist tuition from Tameside Music Service.  Information packs are available from the School Office

Disability Awareness Day

4th December 2013

We were delighted to welcome Mr John McCorkell to St. Mary’s to lead our Disability Awareness Day. The day started with a whole school assembly which focused on the theme ‘Everyone has a gift from God.’  He helped the children to understand that there are a range of disabilities which can mean that things can take a little longer for some people.  Mr McCorkell emphasised that everyone has abilities or ‘gifts’ from God which should be used to help each other.

Assembly was followed by class workshops and the children were encouraged to ask questions throughout.  Everyone was impressed by the children’s attentiveness and the level of empathy their questioning demonstrated.  It was a most successful day.

Anti Bullying Week

4th December 2013

This annual event in school raises the profile of our work to prevent and deal with instances of bullying.  During the week, Mrs Southam, our PSHE Subject Lead, led assemblies with an anti bullying focus.  Each class also completed a range of workshops to further develop their understanding and awareness of the issues surrounding bullying.  Each class presented a summary of their learning at a special assembly to close the week.

Watch out for our Anti Bullying Questionnaire for parents.  It is designed to help us improve the current strategies we use to deal with incidents of bullying.

Y2 Visit to Staircase House, Stockport

4th December 2013

Class 2D visited Staircase House in Stockport as part of their learning about the Great Fire of London.  The children really enjoyed their day.  They especially enjoyed dressing up and the opportunity to build their own house.  The children produced a persuasive leaflet, encouraging other people to visit Staircase House, when they got back to school.  This is an extract from Zara’s leaflet:

A Visit to Staircase House – the most exciting place on earth

What is it like at Staircase House?

  • Staircase House is the most stupendesest place on earth and is lots of fun.
  • Staircase House staff let you dress up as the most important people from the past and build houses.
  • They teach you fascinating and fun facts about the Great Fire of London.
  • They also let you draw pictures and sing songs.

Year 6 Crucial Crew and Victorian School

18th October 2013

On Friday 7th October the pupils from Year 6 enjoyed a trip to Crucial Crew, followed by a visit to the Victorian School, at Portland Basin.

At Crucial Crew the children learned about fire safety, contacting and speaking to the police, looking after and staying safe in the country side, dealing with hate crime, and other issues that arise as they grow up. At each of the stations the teams were awarded points, and it was team 7 that came out on top. The children really enjoyed their time at Crucial Crew and learnt an awful lot.

After having some lunch the children then went back in time to the Victorian Era. Here they met their extremely strict school mistress. The children were really put through their paces, having their finger nails checked, chanting their times tables and writing using slate boards and pencils. Obadiah, Albert and Ava all behaved well although their was one ‘bare-faced liar’ who had to receive a rather harsh punishment! Finally, the children had to bow or curtsy to the ‘school inspector’ on their way out of the school!

Again, the children were exceptionally well behaved and it was commented on by members of the public and staff and both centers how polite, well behaved and enthusiastic the children were. Well don Year 6.

Holidays during term time – change to legislation

15th July 2013

The Department for Education (DfE) has announced important news to legislation surrounding holidays in term time.

From September 2013, the new law gives no entitlement to parents to take their child on holiday during term time.  Any application for leave must only be in exceptional circumstances. It is clear that Headteachers are not to be expected to class any term time holiday as exceptional.  The reason for this change in legislation is that in 2011-2012, 9.7% of all absences in England were due to parents taking their children out of school during term time.

As a school, we fully appreciate the financial difficulties that some parents face when booking holidays, particularly during the school holidays.  Nevertheless, there is a clear expectation from the DfE that all school have firm policies in this respect and that school policies will be subject to stringent checks.

At St. Mary’s, we are in a fortunate position – absence figures are low.  This is due to the excellent support we receive from our parents who do not take their children out of school during term time. Nevertheless, we will apply the new legislation to the very small number of parents who do take their children out of school.  In support of this, the Governing body has also taken the decision, from September to fine any parent who takes their children on holiday during term time.

Hinduism Day

15th July 2013

On Friday 12th July, we held a Hinduism Day in school where children from F2 up to year six developed their understanding of the religion. The work links with our Catholic RE curriculum where all classes study other world religions in the summer term. Treebunganunda was the Hindu presenter who wowed us with a range of interesting stories, opportunities to dress as Hindu Gods and the chance to meet other Hindus from different countries. There was also a focus on Diwali, the children will continue working on the religions in their own classrooms!

These images sample a few of the amazing things we did during the day!

In February 2013, we raised £176.50 for CAFOD through a non uniform day.  Thank you for your generosity.

We are currently raising funds for Caritas through the St. Joseph’s Penny collection.  To date, we have collected £100.90.  Once again, many thanks.  If you have not already done so, please return your box to school by Monday 25th March.

On 15th March, we will be having a non uniform day in support of Comic Relief. The children are asked to wear something red in return for a donation.

St. Mary’s in the media

5th March 2013

Our excellent KS2 SAT results have received recognition in both the national and local media.

  • In December 2012, the BBC website reported that St. Mary’s was amongst the 100 most improved schools nationally, based on a 3 year trend.
  • Also, on the BBC website, we are ranked 153 nationally in terms of pupil attainment.
  • The Manchester Evening News reported that St. Mary’s was one of only 31 schools in Greater Manchester where 100% of pupils achieved Level 4 or above in both English and Maths at the end of Year 6.
  • The Tameside Advertiser also ran an article in praise of our success.

Everyone associated with St. Mary’s can feel justifiably proud of our success and achievements. These results are indicative of the hard work, talent, creativity and commitment of everyone involved with our school, not least the children themselves – for this a sincere thank you.

We have been awarded £10,000 from ‘Awards for All’ to put towards the redevelopment of the site of the former mobile classrooms.  This money has been matched funded by school and the PTA.  We are now working with a landscape design team to redevelop the area into additional play space for the children.

Two New Behaviour Schemes

13th January 2013

New Behaviour Schemes: ‘It’s Good To Be Green’ and ‘Class Compliments’

We have launched a new behaviour scheme in school called ‘It’s Good To Be Green’. The scheme is designed to recognise and reward consistent good behaviour.

How the scheme works: Each class has a ‘It’s Good To Be Green’ chart displayed in their classroom. Each child has their name with a green card displayed in a pocket on the chart. The green card says ‘It’s Good To Be Green!’ and the children will associate being ‘on green’ with a positive feeling of having done the right thing.

If, however, during the day, a child has to be ‘warned’ about inappropriate behaviour, then the green card is replaced with a yellow warning card. This warning gives the child an opportunity to reflect and consider their behaviour and make sure they don’t repeat the inappropriate behaviour. If a child receives a second warning, the yellow card is replaced with an orange warning card and he or she will miss their playtime. Should a further incident arise, the warning card is replaced with a red consequences card and the child will have to go and see the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher (in her absence). Parents will also be informed. Serious misdemeanors are rare at St. Mary’s, but should one occur, a child would go straight to ‘red’ and his or her parents informed.

To reassure you, the vast majority of children are polite, well behaved children who are kind and generous to each other and this scheme will recognise and reward these pupils for their consistent excellent behaviour. Each child who stays ‘on green’ will be rewarded with an ‘It’s Good To Be Green’ certificate at the end of each half term. Children who stay ‘on green’ for the duration of the school year will receive a special prize at our end of year Presentation assembly.

Through this scheme we are encouraging the children to take responsibility for their own behaviour and to develop independence of thought in choosing their own correct behaviour. We are running this scheme alongside our new ‘Class Compliments’ system which rewards whole class excellence in behaviour. Each class has agreed a target number of compliments and a ‘treat’ with their class teacher. Compliments can be given by any any adult in school or any visitor to school when every member of the class is observed choosing to do ‘the right thing’. We have trialled the schemes successfully last term in some of our classes and are now rolling the system out to all our KS1 and KS2 classes.

We would appreciate your support in discussing these systems with your child at home and perhaps asking them the question ‘have you stayed ‘on green’ today?’ when you collect him or her from school.

Santa visits St. Mary’s

30th December 2012

Santa was able to squeeze a visit to St. Mary’s into his busy schedule.  First of all he had requested a ‘pupil progress’ meeting with Ms Reeves, then with a big smile on his face he visited our EYFS classes and Years 1 and 2 who all sang their favourite Christmas songs for him.

‘Carols Around the Tree’

30th December 2012

Term ended with the School Choir singing Carols Around the Christmas Tree for the whole school.  The parents of the children in the Choir also joined us and enjoyed a mince pie or two.  The children sang beautifully and reminded us of the joy and hope the Christmas season brings.

Denton Community Christmas Concert

An extract from the Salford Diocese website:

The town of Denton, 6 miles to the east of Manchester, is world-famous for its hats. Small wonder then, that the annual Christmas Concert in the parish church of St Mary in the centre of town featured some remarkable headgear. Advent-wreath hats, candle-hats, flat caps and even a night cap featured in the medley of sketches and carols put on by local schools.

Over 700 people crowded into the church to watch pupils from St Mary’s Primary SchoolSt John Fisher Primary SchoolSt Anne’s Primary School and St Thomas More RC College perform four different sketches on the Advent theme, on the evening of 19th December.

The meaning of the Advent wreath, a sketch on family life in Advent, a series of French ditties and dialogues and the world’s fastest-ever performance of Scrooge, combined with the lusty singing of traditional carols, made for a wonderful evening of prayer, enjoyment and praise.

Parishioners and pupils from St Thomas More served mulled wine and mince pies as guests filed in to the venue.

Fr John Flynn, Administrator of St Mary and St John Fisher, said, “we knew we were in for a treat when children from the schools were putting in hours of practice in the week leading up to the event. A hearty congratulations to all involved. I am sure that the event has helped prepare hearts and minds for the celebration of Christmas in a few days’ time. All are welcome to our Christmas Masses at 5.30pm, Midnight and 10.45am at St Mary’s, and at 7.30pm and 9.30am at St John Fisher”

Babushka

30th December 2012

Congratulations to our EYFS and KS1 children on their excellent performances in their Christmas production.  Our EYFS children sang a selection of Christmas songs with great joy and gusto. While our Y2 gave a very confident performance of Babushka even enough many of them were feeling under the weather, ably supported by our Y1 choir, who showed tremendous promise for next year.

St Mary’s – Top Performing Primary School in Tameside in 2012

30th December 2012

With the publication of the league tables, we were delighted to find out that we were the top performing primary school in Tameside in 2012.  We amongst 31 schools in Greater Manchester whose pupils attained the expected standard of Level 4 in both English and Maths in their end of KS2 tests.  A significant proportion of our pupils exceeded this standard attained both Level 5 in English and Maths. Ten per cent of our children attained Level 6 in maths.

This fantastic achievement is testimony to the progress we have made as a school over the last three years.  As a result we are one of the top 100 most improved schools in the country.  My thanks to all our members of staff whose talent, dedication and hard work has secured these outcomes.  My thanks also to our parents who are so supportive of our work and not least to our enthusiastic children who come to school every day with a determination to work hard and succeed as well as have fun.

School Asthma Card

30th November 2012

Thank you to all the parents who have returned their child’s School Asthma Card. Cards have been issued to children who have been diagnosed with asthma by a health professional.  The Asthma Card helps us to support your child more effectively in the management of his or her condition.  Please return your child’s Asthma Card to school, if you have not already done so.

Anti Bullying Week

30th November 2012

Our pupil surveys and interviews with children tell us that the vast majority of children enjoy coming to school and feel safe.   November was anti bullying month and we held a series of events and special lessons to raise the children’s awareness of issues realed to bullying (including cyber bullying).  The children were taught to recognise the different forms of bullying and were advised of what to do if they were being bullied in school or outside of school.  We also dealt with the issue of the bystander and the role he or she could play in resolving bullying related issues.

International Week

30th November 2012

As part of our work on ‘Internationalism’  we arranged two workshops for our KS2 children.  As so many of our pupils take part in martial arts after school, we offered them the opportunity to explore the different forms of ‘Martial Arts Around the World’ and to try out a new activity.  We were also delighted to welcome back the International Society who ran a series of workshops in the school hall which gave the children an insight into the lifestyle and culture of different countries from around the world.

Numeracy Curriculum Workshop

30th November 2012

Thank you to the parents who attended the Numeracy Workshop led by Mr Brown, our Maths Subject Leader. The workshop gave parents the opportunity to find out about some of the strategies we use in school to help support your child in the development of his or her maths skills.  Our Y6 children showcased some of the exciting resources we use in school to make mathematics fun.  Parents were also given a policy document which outlines how addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are now taught at St. Mary’s.

Year 5 Build a Formula 1 Car!

30th November 2012

Some of Y5 children went to St Thomas More College to take part in a STEM project event.  The STEM project is co-ordinated by St Thomas More as part of their specialism in Science, Technology and Maths.  The project involved the children designing and building a Formula 1 car (fortunately for the streets of  Denton – not life size) and taking part in a Grand Prix.  The children were most disappointed not to win the Grand Prix but had a great time and gained from working alongside children from other schools.
